José Muñoz

Denver, CO – José Muñoz has been appointed President of Education Commission of the States, an organization that serves as a partner to state policymakers by providing personalized support and helping education leaders come together to learn from one another. As President, Muñoz will spearhead the organization’s work with states and partners to create effective education policy.

Muñoz, who has almost 30 years of experience leading initiatives that create meaningful change in communities across the country, is a nationally recognized leader in developing key partnerships with state and local governments, school districts, teachers unions, nonprofits and businesses. His expansive experience in both the private and public sectors reflects his commitment to leading initiatives that help students access equitable and robust education opportunities.

Most recently, as Director of the Coalition for Community Schools at the Institute for Educational Leadership, Muñoz organized national, state and local leaders to adopt policies that support community schools and advance equity in education at the local, state and federal levels. Previously, as Executive Director of the ABC Community School Partnership in Albuquerque/Bernalillo County, New Mexico, he significantly increased the number of community schools, redesigned the organization’s funding strategy and expanded workforce development opportunities.
