Nicholas Carlisle, Ph.D., J.D.

Dr. Nicholas Carlisle has been selected as the next CEO of AIDS Alabama. An Alabama native, Dr. Carlisle brings more than two decades of experience advancing public health, HIV advocacy, research, and nonprofit leadership. Throughout his career, he has worked alongside people living with HIV and communities most impacted by the epidemic, both domestically and internationally. 

Prior to joining AIDS Alabama, Dr. Carlisle served as Deputy Director of the Center for the Study of Sexual and Gender Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he conducted public health research focused on improving health outcomes for people living with HIV and communities most impacted by the epidemic. 

He previously served as Executive Director of the Southern AIDS Coalition, where he worked to strengthen the South's response to HIV and advance health equity across the region. He also served as Executive Director of Thrive Alabama, was a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer, and created Alabama's first legal program for people living with HIV. 

​Throughout his career, Dr. Carlisle has combined expertise in public health, law, advocacy, research, and nonprofit leadership to expand access to care, reduce stigma, and improve health outcomes. His work reflects a steadfast commitment to community, dignity, and ensuring every person has access to compassionate, high-quality care and support. 

Nicholas holds a Ph.D. in Health Behavior from The University of Alabama at Birmingham, a J.D. from The University of Alabama School of Law, and a B.S. in Finance from The University of Alabama at Birmingham, graduating magna cum laude, and he is a member of the Alabama State Bar with ongoing board and advisory involvement in HIV/AIDS policy and public health.  

Through its health and wellness programs, AIDS Alabama provides services to those affected by HIV. As part of a comprehensive approach to treatment, education, and prevention of HIV, AIDS Alabama provides housing, health care services, health insurance premium assistance, and support groups designed to empower community members living with HIV/AIDS. AIDS Alabama also offers comprehensive Prevention Programs, including HIV and STI testing and treatment, counseling, and outreach to at-risk communities.
