Owen Ryan: President and CEO

Denver, CO – Owen Ryan has been appointed as President & CEO of Project Angel Heart. In addition to a passion for the role of food as medicine, Ryan brings an extensive background in nonprofit management and leadership to this position. Most recently, he served as Executive Director of the International AIDS Society (IAS), an association with more than 11,000 members and 60 staff based in Geneva, Switzerland. During his tenure at IAS, Ryan led the organization through a historic period of growth in annual revenue and a significant shift in strategic direction.

Ryan’s passion for public health was solidified during his time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Malawi. In the nearly two decades since, he has worked for a variety of health organizations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He has also served on the boards of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Ryan’s public policy research and writing have been published in various peer-reviewed journals including The Lancet and Health Affairs.

Project Angel Heart improves health and well-being for people with life-threatening illnesses by preparing and delivering medically tailored meals and promoting the power of food as medicine. In 2019, Project Angel Heart will prepare and deliver over 500,000 nutritious meals to more than 3,000 critically ill neighbors in Denver and Colorado Springs. Through programs and thought leadership, Project Angel Heart has broadened its impact to build partnerships with health care providers, legislators and community leaders to keep food and nutrition at the forefront of discussions regarding policy and health outcomes.
